| Lawyer and statesman, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He studied at Princeton College, was admitted to the bar, and entered the diplomatic service. In 1831 he was sent to the US Senate by Pennsylvania. He was US minister to Russia (1837–9), and in 1844 was elected vice-president of the USA under Polk. Dallas in Texas and in Oregon are both named after him. |
