| Historian and colonial specialist, born in Staten Island, New York, USA. After achieving success in the tobacco business (1893–1903), he retired and wrote three important books on the British colonial system in relation to the American colonies (1907, 1908, 1912). He wrote The English Speaking Peoples (1917), and was chief of the colonial division of the American delegation at the Paris Peace Conference. |
