| Clergyman and ecumenist, born on Hayling I, Hampshire, S England, UK. He studied at Oxford, was ordained in 1907, and became Dean of Canterbury (1924–9), and Bishop of Chichester (1929–58). A strong supporter of the ecumenical movement, he risked misunderstanding during World War 2 by his efforts towards peace with Germany and his condemnation of the policy of saturation bombing. |
