| biography:
| Meteorologist, born in London, UK. He served as clerk in the meteorological department of the board of trade, and founded the British Rainfall Organization for collecting rainfall data with the co-operation of the general public. Through his efforts the number of rainfall reporting stations in Britain was increased from 168 to over 3500. He was twice president of the Royal Meteorological Society, whose highest award (the Symons Memorial Gold Medal) bears his name. |
