| biography:
| Locomotive engineer, born in Stoke Gabriel, Devon, SW England, UK. He was chief mechanical engineer of the Great Western Railway (1902–21). Although not a great innovator, he showed rare judgment in combining the best features of British and foreign locomotive practice in his designs, such as the 4-6-0 ‘Star’ series introduced in 1906, which was the outstanding British express locomotive for the next 20 years. |
