| biography:
| Philosopher, born in Montgomery Co, Maryland, USA. He studied at an Ohio seminary (1855), and took up teaching. While teaching political economy at Washington University in St Louis (1866–9), he became attracted to idealist philosophy, and went to study in Europe (1880–2). From 1884–1911 he headed a new philosophy department at the University of California, Berkeley. His books include Limits of Evolution, and Other Essays Illustrating the Metaphysical Theory of Personal Idealism (1901). |
