| biography:
| Engineer and inventor, born near Otsego, New York, USA. At age 12 he moved to Westerly, RI where he befriended his future business partner, Stephen Wilcox. With his father, Babcock invented the first polychromatic printing press, and later with Wilcox produced an improved type of steam engine. At the same time, the partners designed and produced a water tube boiler that could withstand far greater pressures than earlier types, making possible the development of more powerful steam engines. |
