| US representative and senator, born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Elected to the US House of Representatives (Republican, Ohio, 1939–49), he was an outspoken critic of the liberal policies of presidents Franklin D Roosevelt and Harry S Truman. However, during his brief term in the US Senate (1954–7), he supported President Eisenhower's internationalist policies. He spent a year as a special assistant to the secretary of the interior (1957–8). |
