| British statesman and prime minister (1763–5), born in London, UK, the father of William Grenville. He entered parliament in 1741, in 1762 became secretary of state and First Lord of the Admiralty, and in 1763 prime minister. The prosecution of Wilkes and the passing of the American Stamp Act which alienated the American Colonies took place during his ministry. He resigned in 1765. |
