| Poet, born in Loughton, Essex, SE England, UK. He lived abroad, teaching at universities in the USA and Japan, but has lived mainly by his writing. He published his first book of poetry in 1933, his early career suffering by comparison with his contemporary Dylan Thomas. He wrote prolifically in the following decades, a major work being The True Confession of George Barker (1950). He also published essays, plays, scripts, and novels, and his Collected Poems appeared in 1987. |
