| US representative and senator, born in Concord, Massachusetts, USA. A lawyer and a founder of the Republican Party in Massachusetts, he served in the US House of Representatives (1869–77) and the US Senate (1877–1904). In the Senate he served on the Judiciary Committee and helped draft the Sherman Anti-trust Act. He opposed nativism, sponsored legislation to curb gambling, and was a critic of President McKinley's policies in the Philippines. |
