| biography:
| Physicist, born in Dublin, Ireland. He was professor of natural philosophy at Dublin (1881–1901). Independently of Lorentz, he concluded that, to a stationary observer, a moving body appears shorter, the degree of forshortening being larger at higher velocities (the Lorentz–Fitzgerald contraction), a notion embraced by Einstein as part of his theory of special relativity. |
