| biography:
| Aviator, born in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. The son of an army officer, he trained at West Point (1915) and earned his wings two years later. During the interwar period he held staff and operational posts, and in 1943 became commander of air forces in the India-Burma theatre. He later directed air operations in China. He commanded air forces in Korea (1950–1) before health problems forced him from the service. After retirement he became a supporter of Red-baiting US Senator Joseph McCarthy. |
