| biography:
| Literary critic and scholar, born in Southampton, Hampshire, S England, UK. He studied at Oxford, and became a schoolmaster (1868–76) before establishing himself as one of the most active critics of the day, contributing to all the major magazines and encyclopedias. Among his books are histories of literature, studies of Dryden, Marlborough, Sir Walter Scott, Matthew Arnold, and Thackeray. From 1895 to 1915 he was professor of rhetoric and English literature at Edinburgh. Later works include The Peace of the Augustans (1916), A History of the French Novel (1917–19), Notes on a Cellar-book (1920), and Scrapbooks (1922–4). |
