| US engineer. He trained as an electrical engineer, was involved in the production and launch of the first US space probe, Pioneer One (1957), and supervised the design, development, and testing of the first US intercontinental ballistic missiles. He was in charge of the NASA manned space flight and Moon programme (1963–9), and responsible for the successful landings on the Moon. |
