| biography:
| Business tycoon, born in Liverpool, NW England, UK. He studied dentistry at Birmingham University (1967) but left before completing his degree and joined the Littlewoods high street chain. In 1972 he started up his own company, Schoolcare, and in 1982 launched the highly successful Next retail chain. Further success followed when he introduced a clothing range into ASDA supermarkets under the ‘George’ label (1990). In 2001 he joined the ailing Marks and Spencer company, launching their new ‘Per Una’ womenswear range, aimed at the 25 to 35 age group. Early in 2002, the company recorded an encouraging upturn in sales. |
