| Geodesist, geographer, and astronomer, born in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, C England, UK. He went to the USA as a child and worked for 50 years with the US Coast Survey, mapping the Pacific coast for marine navigation. An avid astronomer, he published catalogues of star positions and began the first observatory in California (1897). In 1898 he was appointed honorary professor of geography and astronomy at the University of California. |
