| biography:
| Politician and prime minister of Belize (1981–4, 1989–93). He studied in Belize City and the USA, was elected to the Belize City Council (1947), and founded the People's United Party (PUP) (1950). Partial self-government was achieved in 1954 and he became prime minister, leading his country (which changed its name from British Honduras in 1973) to full independence in 1981. In 1984 PUP's 30 years of rule ended when the general election was won by the United Democratic Party, but he unexpectedly returned to power in 1989. |
