| Poet, composer, and performer, born in Sète, S France. He wrote a novel La Tour des Miracles (1967), and received the Grand Prix de Poésie de l'Académie Française the same year. Other works include Le Gorille, which was censured in 1952, Les Sabots d'Hélène, Le Petit Corbillard, Les Copains D'abord (1964), and the autobiographical L'Auvergnat. Anticonformist, he first sang with Patachou and at Aux Trois Baudets in 1952. He became known for his tender love songs, poetic and lively in the spirit of Villon, whose ‘La Ballade des Dames du Temps Jadis’ he set to music. He gave recitals at l'Olympia, l'Alhambra, and Bobino with the double-bass player Pierre Nicolas, and also acted in René Clair's film Porte des Lilas (1957). |
