| biography:
| Painter and graphic artist, born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, USA. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1884), and travelled widely. He became a graphic artist for the Philadelphia Press (1894), war correspondent in Cuba for the Evening Bulletin (1895), and a cartoonist for the World (1896). His painting style was earthy, realistic, and energetic, as may be seen in Hester Street (1905), and he was a member of ‘the Eight’, more popularly known as the Ashcan school. |
