| Anglican churchman, born in London, UK. He studied at Cambridge, where he rowed in the first university boat race (1829). In 1841 he was consecrated the first (and only) Bishop of New Zealand and Melanesia, and was largely responsible for the organization of the Church of New Zealand. Returning to England, he was appointed Bishop of Lichfield (1867), and initiated the first diocesan conference at which the laity were duly represented (1868). Selwyn College, Cambridge, was founded in his memory (1882). |
