| biography:
| Mathematician, born in St Petersburg, NW Russia. He studied at Berlin and Göttingen, and in 1877 became professor of mathematics at Halle. He worked out a highly original arithmetic of the infinite which resulted in a theory of infinite sets of different sizes, adding a new and important branch to mathematics. He suffered a nervous breakdown in 1884, and died in an asylum. |
