| Playwright and pioneer of Expressionist theatre, born in Goddelau, WC Germany. He studied medicine and science, became involved in revolutionary politics, and to escape arrest fled to Zürich, where he died of typhoid at the age of 24. His best-known works are the poetical dramas Dantons Tod (1835, The Death of Danton) and Woyzeck (1837), used by Alban Berg as the basis for his opera Wozzeck. |
