| Avant-garde artist, born in Deutschbaselitz, E Germany. He studied art in East Berlin (1956–7), before emigrating to the West in 1957. He had his first one-man show in Berlin in 1961. His violent subject-matter and his ‘wild Expressionist’ style have affinities with Munch and Kokoschka. His forte is painting figures, animals, trees, and other objects upside down. |
