| biography:
| New Zealand prime minister (1989–90), born in Nelson, New Zealand. He studied at Victoria University, Wellington, taught law in the USA and New Zealand, then entered the House of Representatives as Labour Party member for Christchurch in 1979. By 1984 he had become attorney general and deputy prime minister, and succeeded David Lange as prime minister. He proved an unpopular leader, and was forced by his Party to resign just one month before the 1990 general election. |
