| Actor, born in Toowoomba, Queensland, NE Australia. He trained at the Lecoq School in Paris, and was known for 25 years predominantly as a theatre actor in Australia, working with the Queensland, Sydney, and Melbourne Theatre Companies, and particularly remembered for his role in Gogol's Diary of a Madman. He became known internationally for his role as David Helfgott in the 1996 film Shine, for which he won, in 1997, the Academy, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Australian Film Institute Awards for Best Actor, as well as critics awards in New York, Los Angeles, and Boston. In 1999 he won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Shakespeare in Love. Later films include Mystery Men (1999) and Frida (2002). |
