| Film actor, born in San Bernardino, California, USA. Having established himself as a theatre performer, he made his film debut in Mad Dog Coll (1961), and had small roles in many films before earning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his performance in Bonnie and Clyde (1967). He won an Oscar for his role as ‘Popeye Doyle’ in The French Connection (1971), and received further Oscar nominations for Mississippi Burning (1989), and Unforgiven (1992). Later films include Wyatt Earp (1994), Get Shorty (1995), Absolute Power (1997), Twilight (1998), and The Royal Tenenbaums (2001, Golden Globe). |
