| biography:
| Memorialist, born in La Rochelle, W France. The son of a Huguenot banker, he studied law in Paris, but left his position as conseiller au parlement and began to frequent literary circles. Through his marriage in 1646 to his cousin, Elisabeth de Rambouillet, he met many of the leading literary figures whose lives are featured in his work. His Historiettes (short biographies), completed in c.1659 (published 1834–5), are regarded as reliable and hugely informative accounts of leading men and women in contemporary French society. |
