| Poet and bishop, born in Tantallon Castle, East Lothian, E Scotland, UK. He studied at St Andrews for the priesthood, became Dean of St Giles, Edinburgh (1501), and Bishop of Dunkeld (1515). His works include The Palace of Honour (c.1501) and a translation of the Aeneid (finished c.1513), the first to be published in English. After the death of James IV of Scotland at Flodden, he became involved in political intrigues, and in 1521 was forced to flee to London. |
