| Physicist, born in Orthy, SW France. A lecture assistant in physics at the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers (1954), he became professor at the Association Polytechnique pour le Développement de l'Instruction Populaire in Paris from 1860. His experiments, begun in 1859, led to the production of a battery which could store electrical energy, and which was later improved and widely used in cars. |
