| Footballer, journalist, and broadcaster, born in Leicester, Leicestershire, C England, UK. He played for Leicester City (1978–85), Everton (1985–6), FC Barcelona (1986–9), Tottenham Hotspur (1982–92), and Grampus 8, Nagoya, Japan (1993–4). He made his England debut in 1984 (captain 1990–2), playing in the 1986 and 1990 World Cups, and also in two European Championships (1988, 1992). He was voted the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year (1986) and the Football Writers' Association Player of the Year (1986, 1992). Retiring in 1994, he became a regular presenter of sports programmes for the BBC, including television's Match of the Day (from 1999), and was a team captain (1995–2003) of the sports quiz show, They Think It's All Over. He is also a columnist for The Observer (1995– ), and a familiar figure on television commercials. |
