| Cricketer, born in Barbados. A great West Indian all-rounder, he is the only man to score 8000 Test runs and take 200 wickets. During his career (1953–74) he scored 28 315 runs in first-class cricket (average 54·87) and took 1043 wickets (average 27·74). Against Pakistan at Kingston in 1958 he scored a Test cricket world record 365 not out, which stood until 1994. Playing for Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan at Swansea in 1968, he scored a record 36 runs in one (six-ball) over. He retired in 1974, and was knighted the following year. |
