| biography:
| Poet, born in San Francisco, California, USA. He studied at Reed College, OR, Indiana University, and the University of California, Berkeley, then tried various jobs before beginning to write. He is associated with the Beat poets. From the outset he identified with the natural world and the values of simple living and hard physical work. Since 1965 he has lived mainly in Japan, writing poems which bring together American and Eastern culture. His later works include Turtle Island (1975, Pulitzer) and Mountains and Rivers Without End (1996), a poem cycle some thirty years in the writing. In 1999 appeared The Gary Snyder Reader: Prose, Poetry, and Translations 1952–1998. |
