| Irish statesman and prime minister (1981–2, 1982–7), born in Dublin, Ireland. He studied at Dublin, where he became a barrister and a lecturer in political economy (1959–73). In 1969 he was elected Fine Gael member of the Irish parliament for Dublin SE, and became minister for foreign affairs (1973–7), and leader of the Fine Gael Party (1977–87). |
