| Poet, essayist, and literary historian, born in Stroobos, N Netherlands. A professor of literature at Amsterdam University, his first work was Elementen (1931, Elements), a collection of lyrical poems in traditional style. Far more significant as a literary historian, he wrote studies about Multatuli and The Movement of the Eighties. In addition, he annotated the collected works of Bredero, Couperus, and Multatuli. |
