| biography:
| Galician poet. He married a Moorish poetess and retired with her to a hermitage. He intended to make the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, but apparently travelled no farther than Málaga. In Granada he renounced Christianity for Islam, but remains admired for his charming prayer to the Virgin. He allegedly reverted to Christianity in old age and died in Castilla, though legend is difficult to separate from fact. His texts are found not only in the Cancionero de Baena (c.1443) but in the Cancionero gallego-castellano assembled by H R Lang (New York, 1902). His Cantiga Despedida del amor was long attributed to Alfonso Álvarez de Villsandino. |
