| First emperor of the Tang dynasty in China (618–907). An official related to the Sui emperors (590–618) and the Turks, he captured Chang-an (Xian) in 617, encouraged by his son Li Shimin. He suppressed 11 other claimants, each with an army ruling part of China, then abdicated in favour of Li Shimin (Emperor Taizong). |
