| US representative, born in Ashford, Connecticut, USA. He represented Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives in two periods (Free-Soil Democrat, 1851–7; Republican, 1857–63; Republican, 1894–1903). He was Speaker of the House (1861–3) and was influential in the passage of the Homestead Act (1862). He engaged in various business interests during his long hiatus from Congress (1863–94). |
