| biography:
| Roman official. Quaestor in 84 BC, he became praetor by bribery in 74 BC, and Governor of Sicily (73–70 BC), where he trampled on the rights of Roman and provincial alike. On his return he was summoned before a senatorial court, and Cicero, for the prosecution, amassed such strong evidence that Verres fled before the trial. He seems to have lived at Massilia, but perished under Marcus Antonius's proscription. |
