| biography:
| Lyric poet, born in Verona, Italy. He settled in Rome (c.62 BC), where he met ‘Lesbia’ whom he addressed in his verses. He entered as an aristocrat into the contest of parties, and several of his poems attack Caesar and other political enemies. His extant works comprise 116 pieces, many of them extremely brief, while the longest contains only some 400 lines. He was admired and imitated by Renaissance poets. |
