| Roman soldier, born in Nursia. He fought with Marius in Gaul (102 BC) and supported him against Sulla. In 83 BC, as praetor, he was given Spain as his province. In 80 BC he headed a successful rising of natives and Roman exiles against Rome, holding out against Sulla's commanders (including Pompey) for eight years until he was assassinated by his chief lieutenant. |
