| Italian politician, born in Milan, Lombardy, N Italy. He was podestà of Milan from 1837, and one of the leaders of the Five Days revolt in 1848. As president of the temporary Lombard government, he sanctioned annexation to Piedmont, and was briefly prime minister under Carlo Alberto. As education minister (1859–60), he implemented an important reform of the school system which remained in force until 1923. |
