| Italian patriot, born in Civitacampomarano, Campania, S Italy. With cousins Florestano and Guiglielmo, he belonged to a famous Patriot Neapolitan family. He fought for the Parthenopean Republic in 1799, then left for France, returned to Italy with Napoleon the following year and supported Joachim Murat in Naples. He took part in the 1820–1 risings and went to Florence after they failed. There he famously fought a duel with French poet Lamartine for calling Italy ‘land of the dead’. In 1848 he participated in the risings in Naples. |
