| Composer, born in Pamiers, S France. He became organist (1896) at La Madeleine, Paris, and director of the Conservatoire (1905–20). Though chiefly remembered for his songs, including the evergreen Après un rêve (c.1865), he also wrote operas and orchestral pieces, such as Masques et bergamasques (1919), and a much-performed Requiem (1887–90). |
