| Novelist, born in Aracataca, N Colombia. He studied law and journalism at Bogotá and Cartagena, and began writing while working as a journalist in Europe (1950–65), publishing his first novel, La hojarasca (trans Leaf Storm) in 1955. His masterpiece is Cien años de soledad (1967, One Hundred Years of Solitude). Later works include El amor en los tiempos del cólera (1985, Love in a Time of Cholera), Of Love and Other Demons (1995), and Los Funerales De La Mama Grande (1999, Funerals of the Great Matriarch). He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982. |
