name: Ferrater, Gabriel

pronunciation: [ferater]

sex: male
lived: (1922–72)

biography: Catalan poet, born in Reus, NE Spain. His first three collections, Da nuces pueris (1960), Menja't una cama (1962), and Teoria dels cossos (1966), were assembled in the fluent, intelligent Les dones i els dies (1968), in which the dominant themes of love, frustration, and nostalgia are given serious attention by a moral man obeying his private convictions. An admirer of mediaeval literature and Thomas Hardy, he uses prosaic language to good effect.
