| Dancer, choreographer, and teacher, born in St Petersburg, NW Russia. He studied at the Imperial Ballet Academy before joining the Mariinsky (later Kirov) Theatre. He started choreographing in 1916, and set the foundation of Neoclassical and modern dance in Russia. His most influential ballet was Dance Symphony (1923), and he was artistic director of the Kirov, Maly Theatre, and Bolshoi Ballet companies. |
