| Bass, born near Kazan, W Russia. He was largely self-taught, but after a short period of study in Tbilisi (1892–3) he made his way as an opera singer, becoming well known through the roles he sang with the Marmontov Company after 1896. Among his most famous roles was that of Boris Godunov in Musorgsky's opera. He left Russia in 1921, and died in Paris. |
