| Roman Catholic clergyman and broadcaster, born in El Paso, Illinois, USA. Educated at the Catholic University of America, he was ordained in 1919, and returned there to teach philosophy (1926–59) before becoming national director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Meanwhile he became known internationally as a broadcaster on the ‘Catholic Hour’ (1930–52) and with the TV programme ‘Life is Worth Living’ (1952–65). He was Auxiliary Bishop of New York (1951–65) and Bishop of Rochester (1966–9). |
