| biography:
| Zoologist and microbiologist, born in Röseningken, Germany. He studied philology at Berlin, but turned to zoology, and after research work in Berlin became director of the department of protozoological research at the Institute for Tropical Diseases, Hamburg (1904). He demonstrated the amoebic nature of tropical dysentery, and discovered the spirochaete Treponema Pallidum which causes syphilis (1905). |
